The winner of the Spiel des Jahres 2018 rewards clever pattern formation and forward thinking.

Introduced by the Moors, azulejos (originally white and blue ceramic tiles) were fully embraced by the Portuguese. King Manuel I, during a visit to the Alhambra in southern Spain, was so fascinated by the beautiful Moorish decorative tiles that he immediately ordered his own palace in Portugal to be decorated in a similar manner. As a tile laying artist, it is your job to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Évora.
In Azul, players take turns taking tiles from suppliers and placing them on their player board. Later in the round, they score points based on how they placed the tiles to decorate the palace. Additional points are earned for specific patterns and completed sets, while wasted tiles incur penalty points. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins!
